Guest Demo Report - California

Los Angeles Jumps into Staples Weekend of Action Despite Heatwave

In response to WAR's call to action, fifteen activists in the greater Los Angeles area braved triple digit heat on Saturday, June 21st, to speak up for animals at a local Staples store.

Armed with signs and leaflets, we gave every person who got close to Staples the opportunity to learn the truth. Staples has been delivering supplies in unmarked vehicles under cover of darkness to HLS, a company that kills 500 animals every day.

Although (surprisingly) no law enforcement officers made an appearance, there was one person who arrived shortly after we did, and sat in his truck in the blistering heat and watched our every move during the entire demo. We were fortunate to never have to leave the front of the store. Nobody from Staples ever asked us to leave or move. Two employees even brought out a bucket of water for the canine activist participating in the demo!

Several people turned away in disgust. Others took the information and vowed not to shop there again. Two different would-be customers even insisted on making donations!

Plenty of ice cold water, as well as chocolate mint and peanut butter vegan cupcakes helped make the afternoon a little more tolerable.

A couple of hours in the heat is nothing compared to what our brothers and sisters endure day after day after day in the torture chambers of HLS.

Thanks for your hospitality, Staples! We'll be back again and again until you cut your ties with HLS.

Note from WAR: Glad to see that another determined and resolute group of campaigners hit the streets despite 106 degree weather. Our hats are off to you, LA. And a special thank you to Char and Casey! You ROCK!!!
