Sunday, May 11, 2008 Mother's Day at the Home of HLS First Mother Susan Baker Protests at HLS Supplier Staples and Customer Novartis Note from WAR: Mother’s Day is a very special holiday. After all, we all have mothers whether they are with us now or not. The animals that are imprisoned at Huntingdon Life Sciences have mothers too. Some of their mothers are dead and others are imprisoned in places like Marshall Farms where they spend their whole lives giving birth to babies that are then taken away from them and sold into slavery for human greed and vanity. Those babies and their mothers deserve our love and respect and our advocacy. Consequently, activists made the sacrifice of devoting this Mother’s Day to those without a voice. WAR’s message this weekend goes out to all of the mothers at Huntingdon Life Sciences, on behalf of all of the mothers whose babies are tortured and killed by Huntingdon Life Sciences. ![]() Demo #1: Andrew Baker - CEO - Huntingdon Life Sciences Activists set up an information table, unfurled their large banners and held posters depicting the cruelty and the suffering of the animals at Huntingdon Life Sciences at the home of HLS first mother, Susan Baker. Susan and her husband Andrew Baker, CEO of Huntingdon Life Sciences, own a significant percentage of HLS. Their investment in HLS allows them to luxuriate in their multi-million dollar apartment overlooking New York’s scenic Central Park. Baker’s neighbors, who walk their dogs along Central Park West are invariably drawn to the pictures of mutilated beagle puppies and cats, so much like their own beloved companion animals. Support in this community remains high. One neighbor stopped by the table and took with him a supply of flyers to pass out in his building. Many stopped to sign the petition against HLS and to make generous contributions to the campaign. The sadness of the occasion and the thoughts of all the babies suffering alone and without hope of ever seeing their mothers again, gave rise to unbridled anger and rage at the monsters who continue to allow this to happen. Loud, strong voices chanted in unison….”500 animals died today, Andrew Baker is to blame”…..”500 animals suffered in vain, Susan Baker is to blame”. Activists have reached out to Susan Baker in the past in the hopes of finding a compassionate and sympathetic heart. Their pleas have gone unanswered. Apparently Susan cares more about maintaining her lavish lifestyle and cares nothing for the pain and suffering she causes. Demo #2: Staples - HLS Supplier - 2248 Broadway Back to busy Broadway to the once popular Staples store on 81st Street. The table of free literature and graphic photo representations coupled with the showing of undercover videotape of animal cruelty at HLS assisted activists in getting their point across. Many shoppers stopped to view the video and to speak to activists who adeptly explained the connection between Staples and HLS. The fact that Staples continues to misrepresent and lie about their relationship with HLS makes the activists job all the easier. Many turned away from the popular officer supplier with no plan to return until Staples cuts their ties with HLS. “Your greed, Staples….Your fault”. “Your supplies, Staples….Your fault” shouted the angry activists. Demo #3: Dorothy Watson - General Counsel, Novartis – HLS Customer Last of the long protests of the afternoon is the familiar luxury hi-rise building of Novartis, Vice President and General Counsel, Dorothy Watson. An appropriate place to finish off an afternoon of reaching out to “mothers”. Once again, the banners were unfurled and the posters and literature were taken out. Many flyers were distributed on this busy corner of Broadway and West 72nd Street. Activists were delighted when local canine activists Taxi & Cabbie rejoined the picket line after a multi-week hiatus. Cabbie is recovering nicely from her recent accident. Although tired from a long afternoon of protests, activists didn’t show any lessening of intensity. Novartis is responsible for every animal that is killed at Huntingdon Life Sciences. It is their contracts and their dollars that cause the killing to continue. “We will NEVER back down, until they stop the killing”…activists promised, before packing up and calling it a day. ![]() |
