Escada, HLS Investor Spark and Customer AstraZeneca

Demo # 1: Escada - Global Anti-Fur Campaign

First stop of the day was a repeat visit to the nearly empty Escada store on Fifth Avenue. As usual, store sales people and security had nothing better to do than to watch the protesters from their expansive plate glass windows. Loud and angry voices filled the quiet Sunday afternoon as activists unfurled a large banner and held graphic posters of the mutilated remains of fur bearing animals.

Once again activists wondered how Escada remains in their posh digs on Fifth Avenue with so little business. Pedestrians and potential customers on the street were dissuaded from shopping at Escada as they gave thumbs up of support to activists. Literature about the fur trade generally and Escada in particular were distributed liberally to the dense crowd. Activists were given many promises by passersby that they would call Escada to complain about their continued sale of fur and fur trim.

Demo #2: Peter Laventhol – Owner - Spark Management

The largest protest to date was held at Peter Laventhol’s apartment building just across the street from the prestigious Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). As Owner of Spark Management and with a portfolio, the market value of which exceeds $191 million, it boggles the mind that Laventhol would hang on to 18,900 shares of Life Sciences Research (LSR, also commonly known as Huntingdon Life Sciences). The market value of these shares is in the neighborhood of: $378,000. Miniscule in relation to Laventhol’s other holdings.

Last time activists were at this location, one of Laventhol’s neighbors promised to bring the cruelty and barbarity of the HLS operation to Laventhol’s attention. She assured us that Peter was “a very nice man and almost vegetarian”. He must not be all that nice as he has ignored and failed to respond to polite e-mails and he still steadfastly maintains his blood money shares in LSR. Not very nice at all. Activists have vowed to continue the protests and to expand the campaign to educate Peter Laventhol as he seems determined to ignore his complicity in the killing of 500 animals every day by Huntingdon Life Sciences.

Demo #3: Mark Begansky – Sales Executive – AstraZeneca International

Last up was the luxury hi-rise building of pharmaceutical salesmen Mark Begansky. Despite the fact the switchboard at AstraZeneca forwards calls for Mr. Begansky, Mark’s doorman insists that he no longer works for AstraZeneca. Funny how he has a telephone extension there!

A spirited protest ensued. Literature was distributed to the many pedestrians and people were advised about the relationship between AstraZeneca and Huntingdon Life Sciences. The companies, like AstraZeneca, who contract the services of the puppy killing scum at HLS are just as responsible as the ones that hold the blood slick scalpels in their latex coated hands. The blood is on your hands AstraZeneca and activists will keep returning until they cut their ties with HLS.

Note: A couple of days after the protest, a gentleman who identified himself as Mark Begansky called the WAR telephone line to advise WAR that he was no longer with AstraZeneca. The fact that he called from a private unidentifiable number, left no way to return his call and failed to say where he was now employed left little doubt that his call was less than sincere. If he was no longer with AstraZeneca, then what does he have to hide?
