WAR Launches "Operation: Knock Out" targeting HLS financial supporters On Friday January 6, 2005 activists with Win Animal Rights (WAR) took to the streets of New York City to launch their first campaign of the new year, "Operation: Knock Out". The goal of this campaign is to knock out as many of LSRI's (Huntingdon Life Sciences or HLS) market makers and institutional investors in as short a period of time as possible. Action alerts were issued asking for calls and e-mails to the following: Bear Stearns (Market Maker) Cantor Fitzgerald (Market Maker) Vertical Group (Market Maker) Fidelity Investments (Institutional Investor) American Century Investments Our day began with phone calls from representatives of two of the companies listed above. We expect to be able to announce positive results of negotiations in the near future. Before the scheduled protests, an international press team from SKY TV News interviewed WAR co-founder, Camille Hankins. SKY was interested in WAR's role in the campaign to Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty and the recent de-listing of LSR from the New York Stock Exchange. After the interview, activists headed to Bear Stearns prestigious Madison Avenue world headquarters. An information packet with DVD of undercover video "The Truth" was dropped off and a loud and rousing protest took place on the street just as droves of their employees were leaving for the weekend. A representative of WAR was invited in to meet with a Bear Stearns representative while the protest continued on the street. During the meeting, we were told that employees were receiving numerous phone calls and letters and that many were very sympathetic to our cause. A promise was made to speak again next week to resolve the issue. Next up was the Park Avenue branch of Fidelity Investments, an office we have visited in the past. Our numbers increased as did our volume and passion. Fidelity owns over 200,000 shares of LSRI stock and we consider them to be just as guilty as the puppy killers who work at HLS. Security guards anxiously locked all of the doors to prevent activists from entering the building. However, that also meant that Fidelity customers were unable to enter and transact business. A hilarious scene ensued as one irate customer after another banged on the door and shouted at the security guarded that they needed to get into the building to do business. The SKY News crew captured the entire scene on tape. After the employees of Fidelity packed up for the day, we noticed a Bank of America branch directly across the street. Even though it was freezing cold, we crossed Park Avenue and unfurled our banner for another loud and aggressive unscheduled protest. Customers and passersby were given flyers explaining that Columbia Management, which is owned by Bank of America, is a major investor in Huntingdon Life Sciences. We left with a promise to return again soon. Following Bank of America, we headed uptown to Sir Deryck & Lady Vaofua Maughan's posh and swanky residence on Park Avenue. Sir Deryck is on the Board of Directors of GlaxoSmithKline, a major customer of HLS. We have been here several times and will continue to return until Sir Deryck is off the Board of GSK or GSK stops placing orders with HLS. We will never back down and we will keep on coming back. Best for last was our stop at the E. 74th St. residence of American Century's Ellen DeNicola. Although we have had communications with American Century stating that they no longer own stock in LSRI, our communications with them thus far have been far from satisfactory. The information has been sent to us by anonymous sources that we have been unable to confirm. Phone calls from American Century's HQ are from callers who refuse to identify themselves and who have been rude and disrespectful. Consequently, until we have a statement from a verifiable source stating their intention to not invest in LSRI in the future, we will continue to consider American Century a legitimate target. Our protests at Ellen DeNicola's have never lacked excitement or drama. This one was no different. As soon as our signs and banners became visible, the out of control doorman flew out to the street, screaming at us. We think sometimes that they make more noise than the protests. It is typical at this address that neighbors from up and down the block, as well as from inside the building, come out and approach the protest. Some are interested in information about why we are there and others come out hoping to instigate a brawl. Ten minutes into the demo, a man came out of Ellen's building, waving a handful of documents wildly, which he swears are a complaint he has filed against us for harassment. This was news to us. He made a big show of taking photos of the demonstrators and belligerently got into people's faces with his little camera. What complicated the matter is that he was very obviously intoxicated. Several times he laid hands on protesters, pushing and shoving and came dangerously close to starting a melee. He screamed and yelled directly into the protester's faces and tried to strong-arm women and younger protesters, all of this while being filmed by the SKY TV News crew. He threatened to file assault charges against activists but was told that his best bet was to go upstairs and sleep off his alcohol induced rage. That seemed to do the trick as he backed off, waiting in the lobby for the police, who arrived well after the protest was over. Next time this happens we will be the ones filing charges. "Operation: Knock Out" was launched with five strong protests and we expect excellent results in the coming weeks as we "knock out" one LSRI financial supporter after another. |
